Update: Gas Main Break On Memorial Drive Repaired
Giberson: Memorial Drive Was Closed B/W First & Third Avenues & Train Service Temporarily Suspended
Asbury Park Police confirmed near 5:09 p.m. Monday that Memorial Drive is open to traffic.
The roadway was closed near 11 a.m. due to a gas main break along the 1000 block, Fire Department spokesman Garrett Giberson Jr and Deputy Chief David Kelso said. The incident occurred during JCP&L work along the roadway between Second and Third avenues. The roadway is closed to traffic between First and Third avenues, and train service was temporarily suspended.
Asbury Park Fire and Police departments and New Jersey Natural Gas immediately responded to the scene. Officials also evacuated Cuban Cafe and other businesses in the immediate vicinity.
Giberson said there were no injuries.
This is the second time this month that a gas main breech has shuttered traffic in the city. On Aug 7 Main Street Road Diet work shuttered parts of state owned roadway. The breech occurred when a construction worker accidentally struck a pipe.
