Water Main Flushing, Short Term Rental Registration, & Seasonal Firefighters Needed
New Jersey American Water Annual Spring Cleaning
Don’t be alarmed if you begin to see discoloration in the water being drawn from the tap. New Jersey American Water will be conducting an annual spring cleaning through April 13.
The maintenance practice flushes built up mineral deposits from the pipes of its water distribution system, according to a written notice. A high velocity of water is pumped into the pipes then out through open fire hydrants. While the mains are being cleaned, customers may notice short periods of low water pressure or discolored water. The slight discoloration may linger for a few hours but it only affects the water’s appearance its quality; no health hazards are associated.
Suggested from the utility:
Run the water until it is clear
Draw water for cooking prior to the flushing period
Store a large bottle of water in the refrigerator for drinking
Check for discolored water before using the washing machine or dishwasher
If water pressure or water volume seems low after flushing has been completed, check faucet screens for trapped particles.

Short Term Rental Registration
Property Owners looking to do less than 30 day rentals must complete registration by April 14, city officials have said.
Enforcement of the Short Term Rental Ordinance will begin Monday. The City’s Department of Property Improvement and Neighborhood Preservation will issue summonses for properties found to be in violation of the guidelines adopted in November. Fines accrue for each day a property is not in compliance.
In order to advertise a short term rental with a realtor or online property owners must register with the City to receive the appropriate permits and certificate of inspection.
