City Council Approves Electric Car Share Program
Officials: Program should be up and running by start of summer season
The Asbury City Council’s approval Wednesday of two electric car charging stations will launch its car share program, the first of its kind by a community along the Jersey Shore.
The award went to Jersey City based Greenspot JC, at no cost to the municipality.
The agreement outlines a 5 percent profit share to the city once installment and associated project costs have been recovered and a profit is shown for twelve consecutive months.
“We will move as fast as humanly possible to get it done before the season starts,” City Manager Michael Capabianco said.
Transportation Manager Michael Manzella said the initial stations will be located along Springwood Avenue and within the downtown area [known as the Central Business District].
“We will have to find parking spaces that we all agree on,” he said. “I think we will be looking at spaces that are in demand but not in the highest demand so that way we are not interfering with retail customer business but we do want them to be where customers can get to them.”
The stations will consist of four parking spaces with two charging portals, Manzella said. manz said.
“We anticipate it shouldn’t be more than two months before we get the parking station in the ground,” he said. “Beyond that we can expand this as much as program gets used, [meaning as demand grows].”
