Asbury Park Historical Society Launches Local Registry
Historical Property Inventory Will Lead to Fall Fundraising Tours
It doesn’t matter whether you own, rent, or just know an interesting or historic building, the Asbury Park Historical Society [APHS] wants to hear about it.
“There are all types of old, unusual, or unique buildings in Asbury Park and we want to start registering them into a comprehensive inventory,” APHS President Don Stine said.
The hope not only is to compile a comprehensive list but to eventually conduct historic house tours sponsored by the Historical Society.
“Now that we have taken on the responsibility of the Stephen Crane House, we need to come up with long-term funding efforts,” Stine said The tours, which he hopes will launch this fall, will go toward that effort.
While a property does not have to necessarily be old, it must have some sort of unique history, Stine said.
“So far, the oldest known residential dwelling in Asbury Park is the Historical Society’s Stephen Crane House on Fourth Avenue, built in 1878,” Stine said in a written statement. “But who knows, let’s see what comes out of the woodwork. There are lots of historic and interesting homes and commercial buildings in the city.”
To register a home or commercial property, complete the application available here and return it to the Crane House, 508 Fourth Avenue, Asbury Park, NJ 07712. Block and lot numbers [available via the city website] will be needed to fully complete the application, and a small team of volunteers is being assembled to look into registry information, Stine said. Property owners are being encouraged to participate in the research process.
“I think this entire project will end up being very interesting,” Stine said.
Forms also are available at the Asbury Park Public Library, located at Grand and First avenues; noon to 2 pm Sundays at the Stephen Crane House and via other online media sources [see below]. For more about the Asbury Park Historical Society, click here.
