Tomorrow night’s council meeting now cancelled
6 p.m. meeting is weather-permitting
[UPDATE: The council meeting has been cancelled due to an impending nor’easter. The following is a post from before the meeting was cancelled.]
A council meeting scheduled for tomorrow night is shifting focus to Hurricane Sandy, city manager Terence Reidy said today.
“It’s not going to be a regular meeting,” Reidy said. “It’s going to be a Hurricane Sandy update to the community.”
The meeting will run from 6 to 8 p.m., rather than the usual schedule of a 5 p.m. closed session; 6 p.m. workshop; and 7 p.m. regular meeting.
The hurricane, which struck last Monday, Oct. 29, left approximately 5,821 Asbury Park Jersey Central Power and Light [JCP&L] customers without power. Currently, 2,011 remain without power, according to the company’s website.
Officials do not have a specific timetable for which areas of town should receive power first, but there are “probably a dozen utility crews in town” right now, Reidy said. “All of the major pieces to get the fully back [to having power] are done, and now it’s really a matter of block-by-block [restoration].”
JCP&L released a timetable with estimates for restoration yesterday, but the projections went by number of customers restored each day rather than which areas of town would receive power.
If an expected nor’easter hits before the meeting, the meeting will be canceled, Reidy said. City officials are meeting this afternoon to discuss preparations for the nor’easter.
UPDATE: Business on tomorrow night’s original agenda will be moved to the Nov. 19 meeting, city clerk Steve Kay has said.
