A fire this afternoon displaced 11 residents of the Asbury Gardens housing complex, formerly known as the Vita Gardens, at 120 Monmouth Ave.
The electrical fire took place in Unit Two, according to Garrett Giberson, communications officer for the Asbury Park Fire Department. Three units sustained fire damage due to the fire, and 12 units were affected when power was cut to the building.
At around 12:20 p.m., fire crews arrived on the scene. Power was terminated to the building, leading to the displacement of 11 residents. Seven are currently in the care of Red Cross, while four are staying with friends and family, Giberson said.
It was a two-alarm fire, meaning off-duty Asbury Park firefighters and mutual aid companies were called to the scene, Giberson said.
It is unknown when the residents can return to the building, he said. Electricians were on the scene today assessing damage.
The fire has been ruled accidental and was caused by electrical problems. There was no report of any injury to civilians and firefighters, Giberson said.
The Monmouth County Fire Marshal’s Office responded as well, as did the Asbury Park Construction Official.
“Due to the quick response of the fire department, the firefighters were able to efficiently and effectively extinguish the fire within minutes of them arriving on the scene,” Giberson said. “They did an excellent job in stopping it from going to the rest of the building.”
