A Mother of An Event By Women’s March of Asbury Park
Saturday Celebration Through Music Art & Film At The Paramount Theatre
In recognition of Mother’s Day, Women’s March of Asbury Park organizers are planning a Saturday celebration they call ‘A Mother of an Event.’
It’s a celebration through music, art, and film, organizer Amanda Kane said. Proceeds will benefit Planned Parenthood, Garden State Equality and the Lesbian Political Action Committee. These organizations support all women of all backgrounds and needs.
The event will feature a formal exhibit of over 400 signs collected during the Women’s March of Asbury Park Jan. 21 launch event, a march that drew the participation of more than 6,000 people.
The Women’s March Asbury Park organizers [at right] include Kane, Daniele Fiori, Dallas Hlatky and Jennifer Lampert [shown below right]. They continue to host events in support of not only equality and women’s rights but those for human rights and social justice.
The team has since organized the Asbury Park Huddle, an awareness event aimed at motivating action, and an Earth Day event that solicited hundreds to form a FUND EPA message that was sent to the White House.
“We will continue to be a well of positivity, unity and empowerment by teaming up with those on the front lines in the fight for social justice and organize our own events in
adherence to the agreements of the movement. It is this commitment that will sustain our spirits and harden our resolve on the long march ahead,” the women said in a written statement.
A 4 to 6 p.m. cocktail reception will be held on the second floor mezzanine of the theater, with Planned Parenthood, Garden State Equality and LPAC onsite to provide more information and answer questions.
The local a capella group Olympia’s Daughters, known for their songs of protest and empowerment will perform from 6 to 7 p.m.
At 7:15 p.m. the award-winning Love Wins will be screened. The short documentary features octogenarians Jan Moore and Emily Sonnessa, who met and fell in love during a time when doing so was strictly taboo. The couple raised three children while living in suburban New Jersey, completely in the closet. Their compelling, and at times humorous story, spotlights how gay couples lived double lives in fear of being ‘outed.’
Following the screening, Moore and Sonnessa will join the film’s creator Robin Kampf for a talk show style interview hosted by comedian Judy Gold.
The Women’s Day organizer say the event is held in celebration of the rights of women from all walks of life.
Tickets are $10, available via the eventbrite.com page here. The Paramount Theatre is located at 1300 Ocean Avenue.
