AP Biz Owners Campaign to Support Hurricane Victims
Proceeds From 3-Day Fundraiser To Help Rincon Puerto Rico Community
A group of Asbury Park business owners have come together to lead a campaign to support 2017 hurricane victims.
Led by Marilyn Schlossbach Food For Thought By The Sea nonprofit, the team is calling on those in the business community to lend a hand during the Nov 10 to 12 fundraising drive.
The team includes Watermark owner Russell Lewis, Purple Glaze’s Jacki Sharpe, Realtor Phyllis Maffucci, Cowerks and Asbury Fresh founder Bret Morgan, and Asbury Park Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sylvia Sylvia-Cioffi.
“The hope is the rest of the business community will participate in whatever way they are comfortable,” Sylvia-Cioffi said. “For instance, a retailer may donate a portion of proceeds from an item; bars or restaurants may offer a specific drink or menu item.”
And whether businesses opt for a volunteer table during Asbury Fresh, offering a portion of a day’s sales or a donation can at a register, all funds raised will be donated to a GoFundMe campaign established in support of the Rincon Puerto Rico community.
“Our intention with this fundraiser is to provide direct aid that will allow Rincon to get back on its feet as soon as possible providing the services and experiences that drive its tourist-based economy,” organizers said in a written statement.
A hundred percent of the proceeds will be given to individuals and the local Rincon business community to help them rebuild.
“Relief in the Park is such a great example of the uniqueness of Asbury Park, Sylvia-Cioffi said. “The Chamber is thrilled to collaborate with the business community in this effort. It was entirely through their altruism, that Relief in the Park originated and they are the driving force. If you know anything about Asbury Park, you know it isn’t the kind of environment that allows suffering to go unassisted. These folks don’t just say “oh, that’s too bad” and move on. They reach out, they plan, they accomplish, and most importantly, they improve lives.”
