Women From Across the State Unite At Inaugural Asbury Park Women's Convention: A Day Of Politics & Comedy
A group of Asbury Park women organized a daylong convention Saturday to help empower, educate and motivate women from across the Garden State at the iconic Paramount Theatre.
The event featured music, comedy, recognitions, speeches and panel discussions with some of the state’s most celebrated leaders, as well as those just beginning to make their marks on the political landscape,
Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg, Sen Sandra Cunningham, Former Lt Governor Kim Guadagno, and Assemblywoman Joann Downey were among those who shared their expertise in speeches and on panels that addressed everything from Healthcare and Equal Pay to Sexual Violence and Losing Forward: How To Make A Loss A Win.
“Women run when they are asked, men run because they are qualified, we have to do better,” Brenda ‘Sue’ Fulton said during the Losing Forward panel discussion. Fulton, who ran for Freeholder in 2017, has been tapped by Gov. Phil Murphy to head the Motor Vehicle Commission.
Among those honored during the event were Women’s March Asbury Park organizers Daniele Fiori, Amanda Kane, Dallas Hlatky and Jennifer Lampert, and Atlantic City Freeholder Ashley Bennett. The 32-year-old Egg Harbor Township resident ran for and won her first political office in November. Bennett who recently appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, hit the national landscape after unseating a Republican male incumbent who posted a meme asking whether participants in the Women’s March on Washington would be home in time to cook dinner.
The inaugural Women’s Convention: A Day of Politics and Comedy drew an audience of close to 700 organizers and featured fare from female owned businesses and a special guest appearance from the Girl Scouts.
The organizers included Asbury Park Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn, Councilwomen Yvonne Clayton and Eileen Chapman, Comedian and Community Activist Jess Alaimo Community Organizer Kerry Margaret Butch – who served as Executive Director of the League of Women Voters of New Jersey, and Jersey Pride Organizer Linda Phillips. Behind the scenes organizational help included Stephanie Salomonsen of Eatontown, a Kean University alum and longtime Monmouth County Democrat member, and Christina Zuk of Long Branch, a Rutgers University alum who works as a Democratic lobbyist for the Princeton Public Affairs Group. Zuk was the political director for Barbara Buono’s 2013 campaign for Governor
