Harris, a Neptune resident, is the owner of Asbury Galleria, also located on the AP Boardwalk. She thanked those in the community for their help and support.
“This is really just a temporary exhibit, through mid-March,” she said of her location at 1200 Ocean Avenue, inside the Fifth Avenue
“We intend for this to tell the story,” Harris said. “Over here on the right is the founding of Asbury Park from the 1800s. It covers the boardwalk, it covers Springwood Avenue.”
With artifacts donated by music historians Pam and Charlie Horner, the Asbury Park and Ocean Township Historical societies, the museum traverses the city’s nascent stage of development to its more contemporary art, music
“Asbury Park has been around since 1871 and it has such a great history,” Charlie Horner said. “I think everyone here would agree that Asbury Park needs an Asbury Park museum. This whole museum was put together in about three weeks with no funding…by an amazing bunch of volunteers.”
“The one thing we wanted to do is to make this an all-inclusive museum, not just showcasing the east side or the west side but all parts of Asbury Park,” Horner said. “When we started doing this, people said ‘well are we going to have enough to put in in this museum but I’m reminded by something Pablo Picasso said, ‘build me a museum and I will fill it.”
