Asbury Underground Light Of Day Returns Jan 13
Art, Music, And Comedy Collide Downtown As Part Of 2018 Winterfest
Known for attracting thousands to the downtown, Asbury Underground Art and Music Crawl returns Jan 13 as curators of the Light of Day Winterfest downtown offerings.
For close to 20 years, the Light of Day [LOD] Foundation has showcased the tri state’s most acclaimed artists in support of fighting Parkinson’s disease and its related neurodegenerative Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis [ALS] and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy [PSP].
“This year marks our 18th anniversary,” LOD Cofounder Tony Pallagrosi said. “We are very excited at the prospect of working with Patrick Schiavino [of art629 Gallery and Asbury Underground founder]. As past year’s successes have proven, the relationship with The Underground and the downtown brings a whole new dimension, energy, and excitement to our cause.”
The eight-day Winterfest features over 150 musicians to 30 venues in three New Jersey cities, New York and Philadelphia, with a goal of topping last year’s record breaking $555,000 raised in support of research, support and awareness.
Celebrating a five-year long collaboration, Asbury Underground will feature 30 performances by over 60 musicians, with a focus on original music. Performances will be held in 18 different downtown locations, mostly art galleries, café’s, shops, and restaurants. There are also 15 art shows, spoken word and comedy performances planned.
“For a number of years, my desire had been to connect what Light of Day was doing on the oceanfront with the downtown,” Pallagrosi said. “Pat really helped make that happen in an efficient and effective way. We now have an event where audience and musicians alike flow freely between each area and venue, and where many musicians present their work in different formats at multiple venues, which was always my goal.”
Asbury Underground kicks off at noon Jan. 13 at Lakehouse with a special presentation by the Lakehouse Music Pros.
New this year is the long anticipated Upstage Club memorabilia exhibit at the Asbury Park Music Foundation headquarters inside the 621 Lake Ave Lakehouse building. Sunday Blues, Bobby Mahoney and Leeds headlines their afternoon shows.
An added attraction will be 1 to 6 p.m. The Capitoline “pop-up” art exhibit in the basement of the 639 Cookman Ave complex. A portion of all the local artists’ and artisans’ sales will be donated to the Light of Day Foundation.
Also new is the Asbury Underground Comedy Stage hosted by local witty-woman Jess Alaimo. Running from 2 to 5 p.m. at DJ’s Delights, located at 620 Mattison Ave, the event features Ariel Leaty, Jordan Manglonia, Angelo Gingerelli, Jack Steiger, Kate Ireland, Heather Lowry, Molly Miller, Alyssa Stevenson, Allie Mae, Mark Henely, Emmy Crowne, Kate Nichols, Tiz Irie, Ian Wolsten, Taylor Allen, James Weir, Ryan Barry, Natasha Ross, and John Minus.
Joe Harvard’s gARTen stage will be moving indoors this year. The 2 to 4 p.m. interactive black light exhibition of artwork created solely from repurposed, recyclable, and disposed materials, will be located at Fitness Lifestyles/BTII Gallery, located at 614 Cookman Ave. Venue headliners include May Darlings, Doctor Danger, Geena, Xylophone of Wrench, and Puppy Grease.
The other venues featured on the tour are art629 Gallery, Exhibit 9 Gallery, Parlor Gallery, Backward Glances, Holdfast Records, Confections of a Rock $tar, Café Volan, America’s Cup, Asbury Park Moto Club, Hot Mess, Blackbird Presents, Rebel Supply, and Coil & Co.
“Once again there has been an overwhelming response from the local musicians who want to be part of this great event and very important cause,” Underground Founder Pat Schiavino said. “It is just overwhelming how generous and cooperative everyone has been with their time and many talents.”
Featured musicians include Pam Flores, Doug Zambon, Blisstique, Arlan Feiles, Emily Grove, Jennifer Lampert, Anthony Walker, Ashley Mckinley, Julian Fulton, Joshua Mark, SOF, Carter Henry, Tara Dente, Jason Portizo, Paul Rosavear, Chris Brown, Colton Kayser, Frank Lombardi, Avery Mandeville, and Devine Sign.
“Asbury Park has a long tradition as being the premier destination for original music here in the State, but what most people are unaware of, is that it is quickly becoming one of the most concentrated areas for the fine arts as well,” Schiavino said. “On Jan 13th, we will be joining the two artforms together in what I hope will bring a broader awareness of just how fertile in all of the arts our City truly is.”
The downtown LOD Asbury Underground Art and Music Crawl follows a planned map and schedule provided via a printed map, available at all participating venues, and via the free Asbury Underground app, available via The App Store or Google Play.
