BOE candidates announce slate for November election
Two entrants in November election team up with two write-in candidates
Four city residents have announced their plan to run as ticket in the November 5 Asbury Park Board of Education election.
Connie Sue Breech, Corey Lowell, Calvin Anderson and Carol Jones make up “Team Vitamin C,”since all of the candidates have first names that begin with the letter C. The four announced their slate through a press release issued Oct. 6. Breech and Lowell seek three-year terms. Anderson and Jones seek one-year terms as write-in candidates, according to the release.
Breech, a 15-year city resident, served the board of education from 2009-2011. She is an Asbury Park Police officer with 13 and a half years’ experience, the release stated.
Lowell has lived in Asbury Park for two and a half years. She previously served the district as a business administrator from 2008-2011. She is also holds certifications as a public accountant and administrator of school finance and operations. Lowell is currently the school business administrator and board secretary for the Keansburg Board of Education, the release stated.
Anderson has worked for NJ Natural Gas for 27 years and is an 18 year resident. He has four school-aged children, according to the release.
Jones is a 35-year city resident. She was employed in the district as a school nurse for 14 years, retiring two years ago. Jones also serves on the city’s zoning board and sits on the board of directors of the Phillips Seaview Towers, the release stated.
There are three three-year terms and two one-year terms up for contest on the Nov. 5 ballot, making a majority of the seats on the nine member board available.
Incumbents Nicolle Harris and Qzeena Taylor seek re-election. Joseph Raines Jr., whose three-year term was set to be up this year, resigned Sept. 26. He was not seeking re-election.
With only one year remaining in both of their individual terms, school board members Gregory Brewington and Gregory Hopson, Sr. resigned in late June. Their seats were filled in August by current board members Felicia Simmons and Kenneth Saunders, Jr. The final year of Brewington and Hopson’s terms were added to the November ballot. Simmons is one of the candidates vying for a three-year term this November. Arva M. Council is the final candidate in the running for a three-year term.
Team Vitamin C will host a fundraiser at the Wonder Bar, located at Fifth and Ocean avenues on Friday, Oct. 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
