The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office is conducting a gun buy program this weekend, according to news release.
Monmouth County residents can opt to anonymously surrender weapons 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Prosecutor’s Office satellite office at 710 Main Street in Asbury Park. Guns are also being accepted at the New Point Comfort Firehouse at 192 Carr Avenue in Keansburg, according to a news release.
“We all share a stake in a safer community, and gun buyback programs provide an opportunity for anyone to turn in any type of guns to help create that safer environment, said Christopher Gramiccioni, Acting Monmouth County Prosecutor in a written statement. “Nobody should have to live in fear of violence in their own neighborhood or in their own home. Gun violence has certainly proven to be a deadly part of many communities across the nation and Monmouth County is not immune.”
Anyone can anonymously surrender a weapon without fear of having to answer questions about their identity or how they came into possession of a weapon, he said.
Cash will be paid for various weapons turned in at the two surrender points as follows: $200 for an assault weapon; $100 for handguns; and $25 for shotguns and rifles. Ammunition, pellet and BB guns may be surrendered at the locations but there is no compensation for those items.
All weapons must be unloaded and transported safely, in accordance with the law.
The gun buyback program is sponsored by the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office, Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders, Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office Monmouth County Police Chiefs’ Association, the Community Foundation of New Jersey, and an anonymous donor.
