A city resident sustained a gunshot wound to the leg in the 500 block of Prospect Avenue Thursday evening, according to police.

Asbury Park Police responded to the call 6:11 p.m., said Asbury Park Police Officer Mike Casey, the department’s communications officer.

The man, reportedly in his 40s, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center where he is receiving treatment for the non-life threatening injury, Casey said.

Police immediately alerted the Asbury Park Unit of the Boys and Girl’s Club of the incident, according to the club’s Executive Director Douglas Eagles. The club is located less then a block away from the site of the incident. As a result, club staff was able to put the club on modified lockdown to protect the safety of the children while police investigated the incident, he said.

“Once we received an all clear from the police department, we took the club off lockdown and kids could safely go home,” Eagles said.

Casey could not say whether the incident was gang related.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing, Casey said.
