Day’s boardwalk ice cream shop must replace all equipment
Business seeks to reopen as scheduled in April
Hurricane Sandy destroyed all the equipment inside Just Another Day’s boardwalk ice cream shop in Asbury Park, but owner Dave Fernicola has said the business inside the First Avenue Pavilion will reopen in mid-April as scheduled.
Power was reportedly restored to the pavilion yesterday. Fernicola [pictured] is awaiting new windows and electrical inspection before he can prepare for the spring, he said.
“We’re going to start from scratch,” Fernicola said. “We have a lot of ideas for next year.”
The design of the newly stocked Just Another Day’s will be largely the same as it was last year, with a few changes to improve operations. Last summer was successful for the ice cream parlor, which is associated with Day’s ice cream shop and Starving Artist restaurant in Ocean Grove [pictured at right in background]. Arnold Teixeira is Fernicola’s business partner.
Last summer was Fernicola’s first on the Asbury Park boardwalk.
“We didn’t know how it was going to go and it went really well and developed a nice following,” Fernicola said. “You put your heart and soul in and you see it just get trashed. It kind of hurts. But it makes you feel stronger to get back and do it again.”
Fernicola is waiting to hear back from his insurance company but said he does not have flood insurance because the Just Another Day’s policy was an extension of the Ocean Grove policy, and his Ocean Grove businesses do not require flood insurance.
“We’re very anxious to get rolling and waiting to get ready,” Fernicola said. “We definitely want to come back.”
The Ocean Grove location has been serving ice cream and food since it was built in 1876, Fernicola said, and he and Teixeira took over as owners about 15 years ago. The Day’s building spans a lot from Pitman Avenue to Olin Avenue.
Day’s and Just Another Day’s are known for serving unique flavors like coconut brownie, black raspberry crisp and cinnamon, as well as low-fat frozen yogurt, sugar-free products and soy ice cream.
