Firefighters Rescue Four Off Asbury Park Beach
Three people attempted to help distressed swimmer
An adult man from Matawan and three people who attempted to help him were successfully rescued off shore Saturday evening, Asbury Park Fire Department spokesman Garrett Giberson said.
The Asbury Park Fire Department was dispatched near 7:41 p.m., Fire Department Chief Kevin said.
The call for service came in after lifeguards had gone off duty.
“Upon arrival, they found four people in the water,” Giberson said. “Firefighter Bryan Condon entered the water with a surf rescue board and Capt. Michael Disbrow entered the water as a rescue swimmer.”
While the initial call came in from the Fourth Avenue beach, when firefighters arrived the swimmers were offshore of the Fifth Avenue beach, Keddy said. The distressed swimmer, Eddie Sabio of Matawan, was rescued north of Convention Hall.
Condon rescued Sabio and two men who came to his aid and Disbrow rescued a female, who also tried to help the distressed swimmer, Giberson said.
All four swimmers were rescued by 7:56 p.m., according to a written statement from Keddy.
Sabio refused medical treatment, Keddy said.
