Historical society to hold annual reorg meeting
Stephen Crane House restoration, five-year plan of objectives on agenda
The Asbury Park Historical Society will hold their annual reorganization meeting Thursday, Jan. 16 at the city’s public library beginning at 7 p.m.
Restoring the historic Stephen Crane House, a five-year plan of objectives, and increasing membership for 2014 will be some of the subjects discussed, according to a news release from the organization.
Charlie and Pam Horner will also give a half-hour presentation on Asbury Park’s unique West Side musical heritage. The couple are recognized by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, as preeminent experts on vocal harmony music. They are also preparing a special exhibit on the West Side’s musical heritage that will run in conjunction with the 2015 Light of Day concert series in January.
“Charlie and Pam have devoted a lot of time and effort into studying and documenting this unique musical heritage, which is pretty amazing when you hear about it,” society President Don Stine said. “We have a lot on our agenda for the upcoming year and we can use all of the members and volunteers we can get.”
The Historical Society also has plans to purchase and restore the teenage home of famous American author Stephen Crane, best-known for his Civil War novel “The Red Badge of Courage.” The house is located at 508 Fourth Avenue and is now privately owned. It will become the historical society’s permanent home once the sale is complete, the release stated.
“We are putting together a special endowment to help us move forward with this project and more information will be available at the meeting,” Stine said.
Memberships for 2014 are also due and the meeting encourages people to sign up and become members of the historical society and get involved on some committees. Annual dues are $25.
If the meeting is called off due to unfavorable weather conditions, cancellation information will be posted on the historical society’s website.
“We hope people will turn out and support us. It should be a very informative and interesting meeting,” Stine said.
Refreshments will be served. The Asbury Park Public Library is located at 500 First Avenue, on the corner of Grand and First Avenues.
