Jersey Shore Marathon set for May despite storm damage
Race winds through eight shore towns
Organizers of the New Jersey Marathon recently announced the event will go on as scheduled although many of the towns along the race’s path sustained damage in Hurricane Sandy.
Those planning the race are also working on a program to donate money to local communities for post-Sandy restoration efforts.
The race has adopted the theme “We are on! Are you in?” to emphasize its resolve to conduct the weekend’s festivities and help in the region’s recovery efforts, according to a prepared release.
The race starts at historic Monmouth Park in Oceanport before winding through Monmouth Beach, Deal, Allenhurst, Loch Arbour, Asbury Park, Ocean Grove and Long Branch. It is still unclear whether the race route will need to be changed, although organizers are currently surveying the route.
“We expect to work with the eight communities which host our courses over the next few months to reestablish certified routes for our 2013 event,” said race director Joe Gigas in a prepared release. “We will keep the public informed as we work through the process, as quickly as circumstances allow. We greatly appreciate the concern and support we have received to date from many across the state and the country.”
The race’s events consist of a full marathon, half-marathon, half-marathon relay, three-mile fun run/walk, kids’ race and other kids’ and family events.

The race is organized by US Road Sports and Entertainment Group, which conducts road races nationwide. Major sponsors of the New Jersey MArathon include Barnabas Health, Investors Bank and United Healthcare.
