Fourth of July Fireworks display in Asbury Park Thursday ended with a reported shooting, Mayor John Moor confirmed.

“I don’t know all the details but there was a shooting,” Moor said via a telephone conversation. “I do know one person was transported to Jersey Shore [University Medical Center].”

Moor said he obtained the information from City Manager Michael Capabianco but did not yet know the details surrounding the incident other than one person was injured.

News of the shooting broke via social media, with over 90 people commenting within an hour of the posting, including the mayor.

Commenters said someone in the crowd yelled shots fired, sparking a stampede from the area surrounding Second and Ocean avenues.

Moor said via a social media post that further updates would come from the City Manager, Police Chief or the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. He also commented on gun violence as a whole, saying, “My opinion, not the City’s, there are just too many guns on the streets of all cities coming up legally or illegally from southern states.”

“What a terrible end to a beautiful day,” Moor said via telephone. “We had a record-breaking turnout, what a shame it was a beautiful night.”

Moor was among the crowd who attended the fireworks display and said he found out about the shooting when he returned home.

“I have no problem sharing this,” he said via his post. “Sweeping things under the rug helps no one bring an end to this insanity.”
