Medical examiner: Bernstein’s death was accidental
Santander resident fell from the building's fire escape last year
The falling death of Santander resident Jay Bernstein has been ruled accidental and the investigation is now closed, according to authorities.
Bernstein [shown at right] fell from the ninth floor of the Santander building where he lived on Nov. 23 of last year. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
His death has been listed as ‘accidental’ by the Monmouth County Medical Examiner, according to Charles Webster, spokesman for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
The accidental manner of death rules out foul play, Webster said.
The Asbury Park Police Department and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau [MCPO-MCB] both conducted independent investigations into Bernstein’s death.
The investigation by MCPO-MCB did not reveal anything other than the incident was an accident, Webster said in an email to the Sun.
“There is no indication this was a suicide and our investigators cannot conclude it was,” Webster said in the email.
Asbury Park police community relations Officer Mike Casey offered no further information or comment on the department’s investigation of the case but did confirm their investigation is closed.
Bernstein owned a penthouse unit on the ninth floor of the building, located at the corner of Deal Lake Drive and Park Avenue.
Bernstein, a prominent real estate agent with the John C. Conover Agency in Asbury Park, moved to the city in 1999.
