Meet Local Author Kelly Walker Edwards
Asbury Park Museum Hosts Book Reading & Signing Event 7 pm Thursday At AP Library
Organizers behind the Asbury Park Museum are gearing up for another busy winter season, offering glimpses of the city’s past through a series of pop up events.
First up will be a book reading and signing event, occurring 7 pm Thursday at the Asbury Park Public Library, located at 500 First Ave.
The book is “Now is the Acceptable Time,” a glimpse of the heartbreaking and heartwarming life and journey of longtime city resident Hazel Walker. Authored by her granddaughter Kelly Walker Edwards, Asbury Park Museum Founder Kay Harris said:
“It is a really great read about her grandmother who was born in 1911 in Virginia and migrated north where she worked as a domestic and raised her family here in Asbury Park,” Harris said.
The newly released self-published book is a semi-biographical novel written as a memoir to the family matriarch, who shared her oral history with her granddaughter; her ‘confidante, shopping buddy, travel companion, and fellow avid reader.’
The novel traces “my grandmother’s life experiences on a farm in Virginia, embrace the boldness of Harlem, before setting roots at the shore town of Asbury Park,” Walker Edwards said. “Her resilience and strength was a thread tightly woven around the family and her stories shared are a mere glimpse between the seams.”
“Now is the Acceptable Time” is available at the Asbury Park Library and can be be purchased on-line through Amazon. Limited quantities will be available the day of the event for $20.
The Asbury Park Museum launched in 2018, operating from December to March through support from boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette at a temporary location along the Asbury Park Boardwalk. The 501(c) (3) nonprofit is shepherded by a group of volunteers who work to preserve and share the city’s history, artifacts, photos, and memorabilia.
Stay tuned for an Asbury Park Museum mobile exhibit, set to launch in January 2020 in partnership with the Asbury Park School District. For more about AP Museum, click here.
