Nosotros to hold fall fiesta
'We want families to come and embrace our culture. What better way than having fun?'
Area residents will get a taste of Latin American culture this fall when Nosotros Spanish-language newspaper holds its first Carnaval Latino in Sunset Park.
“It’s going to be a multi-cultural event — different Latin cultures,” said Nosotros publisher Cecilia Reynolds [pictured at right]. “We want the families in Asbury Park and other towns to come and embrace our culture … What better way than having fun?”
Carnaval Latino will feature vendors, food, games and music, all infused with Latin American culture, on Sept. 16. It’s being held in the fall not only because of the favorable weather, but also because Sept. 15 is the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, when all the Latin-American countries celebrate their independence, Reynolds said.
“Our culture is very rich, flavorful and colorful, and we really do enjoy fun things,” Reynolds said. “We’ve been living in the shadows in this country and it’s difficult, when you’re facing problems and struggle, to go out and enjoy and have fun.”
She also hopes the festival will give Latinos a taste of home and make them feel comfortable, she said.
In addition to the food, music and dancing, the festival will also feature a predominantly American tradition — a beauty pageant for young Latin American women.
Reynolds hopes the Miss Carnaval competition will help the women, ages 18 to 21, to be more confident, she said.
“A lot of people in our community come from small villages where there isn’t much civilization,” Reynolds said. “We want to get these people out of their shell to embrace culture here and embrace American culture.”
Reynolds hopes the festival will attract people of all nationalities and cultures.
“I know they’re going to come because one thing about Asbury Park is they love the high life,” Reynolds said. “This is a very happy town.”
