Ocean Township Artist Behind Asbury Park’s New Mural
Bates: I'm interested in places where groups of folks gather, and why
The artist behind the unmistakable new mural that lives on the Kingsley Street side of Asbury Ocean Club, the city’s newest boutique hotel and luxury homes from master waterfront redeveloper iStar, is Ocean Township’s George Bates.
A spokesperson for iStar said Bates was tapped to create the large mural, “ representative of all the diversity of people who visit Asbury Park.”
Bates, who is a part-time professor of illustration at Parsons School of Design, previously taught at Pratt Institute. He has created three permanent installations across the nation; two for the NYC Metropolitan Transportation Authority Arts & Design program in Rockaway, Queens, and Bushwick, Brooklyn. He completed an installation for the RTD FasTracks North Metro Line in Aurora, Colorado in September 2016, and is currently working with transit systems in Charlotte (NC), Phoenix (AZ), and El Paso (TX) on public art projects.
“As an artist, I’m interested in places where groups of folks gather, and why,” Bates, a Brick native, said. “The direction of ‘folks genuinely interested in having a good time’ comes out of the real social value of this pursuit and how it creates, strengthens, and engages a community across many lines.”
