Ocean Township Police are reporting 13 vehicles were affected as a result of bad gasoline distributed Wednesday at the Wanamassa Sunoco, located on Route 35, at Sunset Avenue.

“On April 18th the police department fielded numerous calls for reports that vehicles suffered malfunctions after refueling at the Wanamassa Sunoco,” Department Spokesman Det Lt Timothy Torchia said in a written statement.

Torchia said Police Officer Randy Slawsky met with a station employee and customers affected by tainted gasoline.

NJ.com reported the delivery occurred prior to 7 a.m. Wednesday  and by 10:41 a.m. the local police department put out a social media alert warning motorists of the incident.

The Monmouth County Department of Weights and Measures was contacted and on Thursday morning it was revealed that the petrol was laced with a significant amount of water.

As a result, the station remains closed while Weights and Measures, the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, and the Department of Consumer Affairs investigate the cause of the contamination, Torchia said.

Those needing to file a claim can contact  1-800-SUNOCO1.
