Starting this week, nomination petitions for this year’s city council elections are available in City Clerk Steve Kay’s office at City Hall.
Petitions require 85 signatures of registered voters in the city, Kay said. They are due back at City Hall on Monday, March 11.
Council elections are scheduled for Tuesday, May 14.
All five of the city’s council members — Mayor Ed Johnson, Deputy Mayor John G. Loffredo, Councilwoman Sue Henderson, Councilman Kevin Sanders and Councilman James Bruno — are up for re-election, should they choose to seek it. Johnson has already announced he will not seek re-election. The current council’s term expires on June 30.
After five council members are selected, those council members select a mayor amongst themselves. The mayor has traditionally been the highest vote-getter, but this is not a requirement.
The new four-year terms begin on July 1, Kay said.
