Public invited to help brighten boardwalk
Volunteers sought to paint beach badge booths, lifeguard lockers, volleyball net posts and recycle bins
Three key business owners and representatives of two city arts groups have come together with a plan to enhance the look of the boardwalk. And they want the public to come out this weekend to help make it a reality.
This Saturday and Sunday, volunteers are sought to paint various elements of the boardwalk in a new color scheme meant to evoke the architectural history of the waterfront.
The effort was coordinated by representatives of the Shore Institute of Contemporary [SICA] and the Arts Coalition of Asbury Park [ArtsCAP], who joined with boardwalk restaurant owners Richard and Marilyn Schlossbach and Watermark Lounge owner Russell Lewis. A representative of boardwalk redeveloper Madison Marquette also participated.
The group chose paint colors meant to evoke the Paramount Theater and the natural scene of the beach, said Jana Manning, a member of the board of trustees of SICA.
“The objective was to make a better connection between the boardwalk and the important architectural buildings that are so special to Asbury Park and the beachfront,” Manning said. “It’s to make a unique beachfront environment that represents the spirit of the history of Asbury Park.”
Volunteers are needed this weekend to paint beach badge booths, lifeguard lockers, volleyball net posts and recycle bins, Manning said. The goal is to get the work done this weekend. If necessary, the effort will continue next weekend, she said.
The city is providing the paint and tools, while the city’s Youth Corps will be painting the lifeguard stands and city employees will paint the trash cans.
Volunteer are being asked to work three-hour shifts — 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. — on either Saturday or Sunday. Contact Jana Manning at jana@manningdesigngroup.com to schedule a time to help, or to ask any questions.
