Update: No Bail For Second Shooting Suspect Captured Sunday Night In Florida
A 16-year-old and 18-old face murder charges for fatally shooting 10-year-old
A Broward County, Fla., judge has determined Karon Council of Neptune will be held without bail for his connection in the shooting death of a 10-year-old Asbury Park boy.
Council made a first appearance Monday afternoon but will return Tuesday on the matter of extradition.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office announced Sunday night that the 18-year-old Neptune resident was apprehended in Pompano Beach, Fla.
The announcement came hours after local police announced they were seeking the teen in connection with the Feb. 21 shooting death of Yovanni Banos-Merino. A 16-year-old Neptune Township boy was arrested and charged Thursday for his role in the murder and shooting that also wounded Yovanni’s mother.
Council [shown in feature photo], is charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, officials said.
The 16-year-old was charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He was arrested at Neptune High School without incident following a brief school lockdown, officials said.
Asbury Park Police responded to a 911 call close to 10:40 p.m. Wednesday of shots fired at a home in the 400 block of Ridge Avenue. Police arrived to find Yovanni and his mother Lilia Merino, 38, both suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both victims were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune but Yovanni was pronounced dead at 11:18 p.m. His mother was treated and released.
A joint investigation with the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office and the Asbury Park Police Department was launched with assistance from the Neptune Township Police Department and the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office.
The 16 year-old juvenile is lodged at the Middlesex County Youth Detention Center, where he remains after a Friday hearing before the Judge Kathleen A. Sheedy, officials said. He is scheduled for another court appearance on Tuesday.
The case has been assigned to Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Bogner.
