Six months post-Sandy, traffic light damage lingers

Signals blinking red throughout town

Six months after Hurricane Sandy, some traffic lights in the city are still blinking red instead of going through the typical green-yellow-red sequence.

Traffic lights with newer technology are experiencing the most issues, City Engineer Joe Cunha said at the April 17 council meeting.

“The newer technology seems to be reverting back to a blinking phase due to a short circuit,” he said. “Older mechanical signals seemed to have fared better.”

The city must go out to bid to have the signals repaired, he said.

Various intersections have been affected, including those at Cookman and Asbury avenues, Cookman and Third avenues, and Kingsley Street and Third Avenue.
