Spurred by recent shooting death, city to hold press conference this afternoon
Event begins at 2 p.m. in City Hall lobby
City leaders will come together for a press conference this afternoon regarding the shooting death of Donte Kelly earlier this week.
Government officials, members of the local clergy and other community leaders will attend the conference, which begins at 2 p.m. in the main lobby of City Hall, Police Chief Mark Kinmon said today.
“We [city officials] came together after this murder and we’ve had some pretty intense discussions the last few days, and we felt it was important,” Kinmon said of the reasons for holding the conference. “There’s so much going on in the city and everybody’s doing a little bit here and there, and we felt it was important for us to take things to a new level and unite a little bit more.”
City leaders will discuss the issues contributing to gun violence and crime, and some ministers will discuss a new summer program they are planning related to such issues, Kinmon said.
The general public is invited to attend and the organizers will take questions, Kinmon said.
Kelly’s death is still being investigated, Kinmon said.
The 21-year-old Asbury Park man was found on a porch on Sewall Avenue after having been shot at around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 7, according to Charles Webster, communications officer for the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office. A doctor pronounced him dead shortly after an Asbury Park police officer found him, Webster said.
Anyone with any information regarding the incident is asked to call Detective John Leidfried of the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office at 1-800-533-7443, or Detective April Bird of the Asbury Park Police Department at 732-774-1300.
City Hall is located at 1 Municipal Plaza, on Main Street at the end of Mattison Avenue.
