Storm surge flowed west to Norwood Ave. bridge
Ocean water at intersection in front of Santander high rise
By Asbury Park Sun
The storm surge from Hurricane Sandy reached historic limits in Asbury Park as ocean water flowed up Deal Lake Drive to the Norwood Ave. bridge in front of the Santander high rise.
Debris can be seen at Deal Lake Drive’s intersection with Park Ave. [above] marking how far the ocean water flowed. Deal Lake also overflowed its banks. The ocean water from the storm surge reached the intersection at Deal Lake Drive just after 9 p.m. last night.
A hurricane in the 1940s was reputed to have pushed ocean water as far west was as Grand Ave, which is the next block past the Norwood Ave. bridge. The Sun staff has never seen photos or any other confirmation of water flowing that far west during that 1940s storm event.
