The owners of Taka restaurant have filed an application to transfer a liquor license from the closed Synaxis restaurant on Cookman Avenue to their location on Mattison Avenue.

The license purchaser is TBD Inc., and the application is for use at 632 Mattison Ave., the location of Taka restaurant [above], according to city clerk Stephen Kay. The liquor license transfer application lists Taka owners William Kessler, Taka Hirai and David Martocci as the owners of TBD Inc., Kay said.

“Our intention is to use it at Taka for the time being,” said Kessler.

An investigation required for liquor license transfers is now underway, said Kay. The police will review the financial sources for the purchase and check any criminal history among the purchasers, he said.

When the investigation is complete, the application will be scheduled for consideration by the City Council, said Kay.

There is no planned date for Taka to begin serving alcohol, said Kessler, as several more steps must be taken before that can legally begin.

The restaurant may also eventually move, he said.

“The fact is that we are considering moving, but we’re not 100 percent sure,” said Kessler. There is no specific new location in mind at this time, he said.

“We are going to stay in Asbury Park, as the liquor license is tied to the city,” Kessler said.
