Members of the Asbury Park Fire Department extinguished a three-alarm fire at 1026 and 1028 Sewall Ave. this afternoon, according to fire chief Kevin Keddy.
The department received word of the fire at around 12:30 p.m., Keddy said. It took firefighters about two and a half hours to get it under control. Flames were not fully extinguished until about 5 p.m.
The Asbury Park Fire Department received assistance mainly from the Neptune Fire Department, Keddy said.
The structure was a turn-of-the-century, wood-frame multiple dwelling, Keddy said, with “a lot of nooks and crannies,” making the fire more difficult to combat.
The fire started in the area where electrical wiring came into the house, Keddy said, so the departments “couldn’t really attack the scene of the fire until the power was cut by the power company.”
The house’s six inhabitants exited safely and two firefighters were injured and are being monitored now, Keddy said.
The fire is still under investigation but has not been classified as suspicious at this time, Keddy said.
“I’m extremely proud of the job my guys did today and I’d like to thank all of the outside agencies that responded and helped us,” Keddy said.
