Three-hour parking violation results in $35 ticket
Handheld devices to replace traditional tire-chalking enforcement
When Asbury Park city manager announced several weeks ago that downtown parking would be free in three-hour increments until Jan. 1, many residents wondered how the new parking rules would be enforced.
At last night’s council meeting, the governing body discussed enforcement and voted to approve a resolution memorializing the temporary parking rules.
City officials decided to implement a three-hour time limit for parking to keep people from leaving their cars in high-demand spots all day or overnight.
“The benefit of people to come to the city for the stores is [this parking system] causes turnover,” city manager Terence Reidy said.
In many towns, enforcement officers mark cars’ tires with chalk and come back when time has expired to issue tickets. Thanks to new technology, Asbury Park’s parking enforcers can keep track of cars through “electric chalking” using handheld devices, Reidy said. Those who overstay their limit in parking spaces will be subject to a $35 fine, the same as regular metered spots, Reidy said.
The rules apply to all metered parking spots in the city.
