Tropical Storm Hermine Updates
The Asbury's Baronet and Salvation events canceled; Soundbooth events still on
This post will feature updates throughout the weekend with regard to Tropical Storm Hermine PSAs.
Noon Sunday: The local Red Cross issued a storm preparedness advisory reminding residents along the Jersey Shore to be vigilant and informed as Hermine passes through the area. “People living in coastal communities that may be threatened by strong winds and flooding caused by Hermine should stay informed about local weather conditions and take steps to prepare,” the advisory said.
Pay attention to local weather advisories and heed warnings from officials.
Secure items that can be picked up by the wind, like outdoor furniture.
Be sure your emergency kit includes a three-day supply of water for each person and food that doesn’t need to be refrigerated, flashlights, a battery-operated radio, first aid kit, medications, personal hygiene items, phone chargers and extra cash. Also, don’t forget to include essential medications, copies of important documents and special items for children and pets.
Keep flashlights and extra batteries handy.
Plan what to do in case you are separated from your family during an emergency and what to do should you need to evacuate.
6p.m. Saturday: The Asbury has canceled its Saturday night rooftop Baronet movie as well as Sunday’s Sunrise Yoga. The Salvation rooftop lounge will also be closed but Emily Grove will perform from 8 to 11 p.m. followed by DJ Atom Worth in the Soundbooth, adjacent to the lobby.
5 p.m. Saturday: Asbury Park officials have announced that permit parking holders who reside within flood prone areas near the city’s lakes will be allowed to park in other permit parking areas from noon Sunday to midnight Monday. The parking relief will be re-evaluated and extended if necessary.
2 p.m. Saturday: The 6 p.m. St. Stephen AME Zion Ecumenical Service featuring Dr. Bernice King has not been canceled, according to Asbury Park Police officials. Sponsored by the Asbury Park Community Action Network [APCAN] the Moving Forward Together Ecumenical Service will be led by Rev. Derinzer Johnson.
Gov. Chris Christie has declared a State of Emergency for Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May Counties in preparation for Tropical Storm Hermine.
“The impending weather conditions constitute an imminent hazard, which threatens and presently endangers the health, safety, and resources of the residents of Ocean County, Atlantic County and Cape May County,” Christie said in a written statement. “This situation may become too large in scope to be handled by the normal county and municipal operating services in Ocean County, Atlantic County and Cape May County, and this situation may spread to other parts of the State. So as a result, in order to protect the health, safety and welfare of the people of the State of New Jersey, I’ve signed an Executive Order declaring a State Of Emergency in Ocean County, Atlantic County, and Cape May County effective immediately, giving emergency management personnel the tools they need to ensure a speedy and orderly response.”
11 a.m. Saturday: The Asbury Park Police Department has just announced that the noon to 4 p.m. Back to School Block Party at the Donald Hammary Community Courts on Prospect Ave has been canceled. The event, free food, backpack and school supply giveaways, rides, and face painting is rescheduled for the same time frame on Sept. 10.
