The sign designating Wesley Lake is missing and volunteers say they believe it’s been stolen.
The blue and gold sign was installed on the lake’s banks near the intersection of Grand and Lake avenues, Citizens for Wesley Lake volunteer Barbara Lesinski said. Wesley Lake divides Asbury Park and Ocean Grove.
The sign’s two plastic posts had a concrete base. The concrete is still intact.
Lesinski’s sister, Patricia “Tee” Lesinski, who is a member of the Wesley Lake Commission, noticed the sign was gone earlier this week.
Lesinski filed a police report this morning, she said, after ensuring the department of public works had not taken the sign down temporarily.
“If somebody has the sign and it could find its way back into those two little holes in the ground, that would be wonderful,” Lesinski said.
The sign was installed through almost $1,000 in donations to the Citizens for Wesley Lake, Lesinski said. It was taken out for some sidewalk and sewer work then re-installed a month or two ago.
Citizens for Wesley Lake was formed in the early 1990s as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
“When [the group] was founded, the lake was really in terrible condition,” Lesinski said. “There were float-ables and algae. The group raised money to put herbicide in the lake and paint railings on the foot bridges.”
Now, the Citizens for Wesley Lake focus mostly on community outreach and maintenance.
